Gwen Toner

I’m a speech and language therapist with an advanced clinical specialism in Down’s syndrome. I have a small private practice for children who have Down’s syndrome in the York area, and I also work as specialist advisor to the national Down’s Syndrome Association across England, Northern Ireland and Wales. I have many years of experience and specialist training in working with babies, children and teenagers who have Down’s syndrome, delivering individual and small group intervention, and working with other professionals as part of a multidisciplinary team. I have attended the World Down Syndrome Congress on several occasions, as well as the annual Down Syndrome Research Forum. I am passionate about supporting people who have Down’s syndrome, and their families. I very much enjoy all aspects of my work.

In my work with the Down’s Syndrome Association, I can offer specialist speech and language therapy assessments. An assessment will last up to two hours, and will explore all aspects of a child’s speech, language and communication skills, and associated cognitive skills such as attention and listening, memory, conceptual knowledge, play, problem solving. Following an assessment, I can provide a detailed written report, which will include recommendations for the type and frequency of speech and language therapy needed for a child. Parents may submit my report to inform provision in their child’s EHCP. The report will be written on Down’s Syndrome Association headed paper, and will reflect the views of the national Down’s Syndrome Association, as well as my views as a clinician with expertise in Down’s syndrome.

EHCP Support

A specialist assessment costs £350 for members of the Down’s Syndrome Association, and £450 for non-members. The cost difference is because the DSA subsidises assessment fees for DSA members.
